Der Beitrag untersucht am aktuellen Beispiel von Pressefotografien, die Menschen aus dem südpazifischen Inselstaat Vanuatu mit Fotografien des im April 2021 verstorbenen Prinz Philip zeigen, Tauschbeziehungen zwischen Personen und Migrationsbewegungen von Fotografien. Er zeichnet die Verstrickung der Fotografie in Kolonialismus und kolonialistische Wissenspraktiken der Anthropologie und Ethnografie nach und lotet widerständige Praktiken ihrer Aneignung aus. Indem er Fotografien mit Ariella Azoulay als Ereignis der Fotografie und zugleich als Cargo-Macht begreift, reflektiert der Beitrag (post)koloniale Epistemologien und positioniert sich zu Konzepten einer reziproken Anthropologie, die Aushandlungsprozesse zwischen verschiedenen Kulturen, Orten und Zeiten in den Blick nimmt.

Images of Images: Colonial Image Practices and their Postcolonial Revenants

Using the recent example of press photographs showing people from the South Pacific Island of Vanuatu together with photographs of Prince Philip, who died in April 2021, this paper examines the gift exchange between individuals and the global migration of photographs. It traces photography’s entanglement with colonialism and colonialist knowledge practices of anthropology or ethnography and explores resistant practices of their appropriation. By conceiving photographs with Ariella Azoulay as an event of photography and at the same time as a cargo power, the contribution reflects on (post)colonial epistemologies and positions itself towards concepts of a reciprocal anthropology that focuses on negotiations between different cultures, places, and times.
