Aus wissensgeschichtlicher Perspektive lässt sich der Diskurs der Medienökologie der 1960er und 1970er Jahre gleichermaßen auf konkrete Medien und Kulturtechniken der Biochemie und Physiologie wie auf neue Metatheorien des Organischen im frühen 20. Jahrhundert rückbeziehen.
Auf Laufbändern und in Nomogrammen, in der Philosophie Alfred North Whiteheads und der Biochemie Lawrence Hendersons emergiert ein Organisationswissen, das nicht mehr auf Substanz- oder Energierelationen, sondern auf Datenverarbeitung basiert. Medienökologisches Denken erscheint so selbst als Symptom einer industrialisierten und verdateten Umwelt und deren Episteme.

Organism and Organisation. Physiological Beginnings of Media Ecology

While Media ecology developed as an academic discourse in the 1960s and 1970s, its discursive history dates back to certain media and cultural techniques of biochemistry and physiology as well as to new ‹organismic› metatheories of the early 20th Century.
A new organizational knowledge emerged on laboratory treadmills and in nomographs as well as in the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead and in the biochemistry of Lawrence Henderson, a knowledge that is no longer based on substance or energy, but on data processing. Media ecology is a symptom of a radically industrialized and data processed environment and its épistéme.
