Während die Rolle von Appropriation in der Meme-Kultur oft betont wurde, ist weniger erforscht, wie Memes selbst angeeignet werden. Hierfür eröffnet das Verständnis von Memes als eine Form digitaler Folklore produktive Ansätze. Anhand linguistischer Witz-Typologien lässt sich zeigen, wie Memes aufgegriffen und zu Para- und Meta-Memes weiterentwickelt werden. In der künstlerischen Aneignung, wie etwa durch Cem A., zeigt sich die Relevanz von digitaler Folklore als kulturelle Sphäre. Antonio Gramscis Konzept der spontanen (oder vernakulären) Philosophie verdeutlicht außerdem den Einfluss von Memes auf individuelle und kollektive Weltbilder, wie etwa im Fall der Incel-Ideologie. Was als «Demokratisierung der Bildproduktion» beschrieben wurde, ist längst zu einer Gefahr für die Demokratie geworden. 

While the role of appropriation in meme culture has often been emphasized, less research has been done on how memes themselves are appropriated. Understanding memes as a form of digital folklore opens up productive approaches in this regard. Linguistic joke typologies can be used to show how memes are taken up and further developed into para- and meta-memes. In its appropriation through artists, such as Cem A., the relevance of digital folklore as cultural sphere becomes evident. Antonio Gramsci’s concept of spontaneous (or vernacular) philosophy also illustrates the influence of memes on individual and collective world views, as in the case of the incel ideology. What has been described as the «democratization of image production» has long since become a threat to democracy.
