Der Beitrag problematisiert die historischen und gegenwärtigen Repräsentationsregime in den fotografischen Abbildungen von Schwarzen Menschen und People of Color (BPoC). Fotografien waren ein Werkzeug für die koloniale Erfindung und visuelle Stereotypisierung von ‹Rassen›. In dem Beitrag wird dies beispielhaft an den Agassiz-Zealy-Daguerreotypien und den US-amerikanischen Lynchpostkarten untersucht. Die zeitgenössische Queer-of-Color-Fotografie setzt überdies eine postkoloniale Bildpolitik um, die BPoC in ihrer intersektionalen Vielfalt sichtbar macht. Dies wird in den diskutierten Fotoarbeiten von Eric Gyamfi und Paul Mpagi Sepuya deutlich. Der Beitrag will zeigen, dass die Kritik und Transformation von Bildern für marginalisierte Subjekte neue politische Handlungsmöglichkeiten eröffnen.

Working to Transform the Image. Postcolonial Critique and the Image Politics of Contemporary Queer of Color Photography

This article problematizes historical and contemporary regimes of representation in photographic images of Black people and people of color (BPOC). Photographs have been a tool for the colonial invention and visual stereotyping of ‹races›. In the article, this is exemplified by the Agassiz-Zealy daguerreotypes and the U.S. lynching postcards. The contemporary queer of color photography furthermore realizes postcolonial image politics that make BPOC visible in their intersectional diversity. This is evident in the photographic works of Eric Gyamfi and Paul Mpagi Sepuya discussed. The article aims to show that the critique and transformation of images provide new political agency for marginalized subjects.
