«(Flaming) Creatures of the Night»

Vampirische Infektionen bei Jack Smith als trans Repräsentationskritik

Abstract (Deutsch)

Abstract (English)

This article examines two film works of Jack Smith, «Flaming Creatures» (1962/63) and the unfinished «Batman Dracula» (1964, with Andy Warhol), in terms of their ‹vampiric› qualities. The metaphor of contagion, which links the vampire figure to trans/queer history, is understood here as a transition into a liminal state. From this, the article develops a critique of trans representation that interprets the aesthetic staging of an ‹infectious› desire for transformation as a strategy to portray transition as a process that defies unambiguous legibility. The central question is to what extent aesthetic forms of expression from the pre-Stonewall U.S. underground can, in retrospect, be understood as a contribution to contemporary politics of queer and trans (in)visibility.
