Social-Media-Plattformen wie Instagram verwenden automatisierte Bildbewertungen (sog. ‹aesthetic ratings›) für das algorithmische Kuratieren von Feeds. Der Beitrag untersucht, wie diese quantifizierten Bildbewertungen in den ‹subfaces› von Plattformumgebungen zustande kommen. Er zeigt ausgehend von der Bilddatenbank LAION-Aesthetics, wie sich menschliche und maschinelle Bildbewertungen überlagern und als quantifizierte Geschmacksurteile in Infrastrukturen der Bildklassifizierung einschreiben. Anhand von explorativen Erkundungen und einer umfassenden Auswertung der informatischen Veröffentlichungen zu LAION-Aesthetics und zwei verwandten Bilddatenbanken wird deutlich, dass automatisierte Bildbewertungen machtvolle Akteure in plattformkapitalistisch strukturierten Social-Media-Feeds sind.

Social media platforms like Instagram use so-called ‹aesthetic ratings› for the curation of their algorithmically structured feeds. The article examines how these quantified image ratings evolve in the subfaces of platform environments. Based on LAION-Aesthetics, an image dataset created to automatically rate images according to their supposed aesthetic value, it is shown how human and machine image evaluations emerge and inscribe themselves as quantified taste judgements on image classification infrastructures. Based on exploratory investigations and an extensive analysis of technical publications on LAION-Aesthetics and two related image datasets, the text demonstrates that automated image evaluations serve as powerful actors in the platform-capitalist logics of social media feeds.
