Der Rorschachtest mit seinen amorphen Klecksbildern ist in den USA zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges ins kollektive Imaginäre eingewandert: Spätestens durch ihre militärische Anwendung im Rekrutierungsverfahren sind die Kleckse vom psychodiagnostischen Testinstrument zur populären Chiffre für verborgene Persönlichkeitsstrukturen geworden. Doch wie wurde aus den Klecksen, vom Schweizer Psychiater Hermann Rorschach 1921 als «Zufallsformen» vorgestellt, überhaupt ein standardisierter Testapparat? Dieser Beitrag versteht die psychometrischen Testbilder als technische Objekte im Sinne Hans Jörg Rheinbergers und fragt nach den medialen Operationen ihrer Überführung von Kontingenz in Normativität, von Rorschachs frühesten Entwürfen bis zu ihrer massenmedialen Inszenierung im Hollywoodfilm.

Giving Pictures. An Object History of the Rorschach Test

The Rorschach test with its amorphous ink blots entered the collective imaginary in the USA at the end of World War II: Through their military application in the recruitment process, the blots turned from a psychodiagnostic test instrument into a popular cipher for hidden personality structures. But how have the ink blots, introduced by Swiss psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach in 1921 as «random forms», emerged as a standardized test instrument in the first place? This article understands the psychometric test images as technical objects in the sense of Hans-Jörg Rheinberger and investigates the media operations of their transformation from contingency to normativity, from Rorschach's earliest designs to their mass-media presentation in Hollywood.
