Medien-theoretisches Sampling

Der Artikel diskutiert eine Weiterentwicklung der Digital Methods im Kontext qualitativer Methodologien. Aus dieser Kontextualisierung leitet er ein Verfahren ab, das sowohl Digital Methods weiter methodologisiert als auch die medientechnischen Bedingungen qualitativer Kultur- und Sozialforschung unter den Bedingungen fortgeschrittener Digitalisierung reflektiert: «Medien-theoretisches Sampling» wird als Teil qualitativer Methoden skizziert, das Medientechnik bei der Datensammlung und -entwicklung einen ähnlichen Rang einräumt wie «Theorie» beim theoretischen Sampling der Grounded Theory Methodology. Mit Bezug auf eigene Forschung zur Geschichte des Online-Kommentars wird dieses Verfahren exemplifiziert.

Media-theoretical Sampling. Digital Methods as part of qualitative methods

The article discussesd digital methods in the context of qualitative methodologies. It consequently develops a procedure that on the one hand further methodologizes digital methods, and on the other hand reflects the media-technological conditions of qualitative methods under the conditions of advanced digitization. This analysis outlines «media-theoretical sampling» as belonging to qualitative methods that position media technologies as an actor in productive sampling similar to the way «theory» does in the methodological sampling of grounded theory methodology. The article exemplifies this procedure by presenting a current project on the history of online commenting.
